What Is Downcycling And How Is It Different From Recycling?

Downcycling is the process of breaking down waste into something that is a lower quality and/or function than the original material was intended for. downcycling is shredding small pieces of fabric into shoddy – the super fluffy stuff in this photo!

This downcycling process is different than “recycling” (an example of recycling would be using fabric scraps to create a new fabric) but it does keep the fibers in circulation and avoid or delay landfill.

Shoddy is typically used for industrial insulation such as carpet padding, mattress stuffing, furniture lining, moving blankets, car door linings, etc, BUT it can be used for incredible personal crafts like dolls and stuffed animals, and filling pillows, cushions, blankets ect.,
